Employee Background Investigations

What is an Employee Background Investigation?

It is the thorough examination of a potential or current employee’s background, or a person in the position of authority or responsibility. With signed consent, you are able to make fast-informed decisions regarding hiring or promotions based on facts. Positive identification is a must.

Why Pre-Screen?

The responsibility of hiring a new employee is one of the most important decisions a company will make. It is an opportunity to add a skilled individual to your team of valued employees or adversely it may represent risks. According to a recent study approximately 30% of resumes contain information that is misleading or false. At FBIG Investigations we help you take the guesswork out of hiring. Pre-screening portrays a more accurate background of an individual. Our service team will provide information that will aid you in selecting the best applicant for the job.

Did You Know?

FBIG Investigations, is one of the largest investigation firms in British Columbia. We are duly licensed, bonded and insured. We are a full service investigation company founded in 1988 by Fred Bodnaruk, a former senior member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Our commitment to our clients has earned us a reputation for professionalism, integrity, discretion, and innovation.

In today’s environment, checking an individual’s background is essential. Your clients, shareholders and fellow employees demand that due diligence be completed.

Did you know that litigated action against an employer could result if a person hired later commits a crime against a co-worker or third party? Violence in the workplace is a real threat to employers. An investigation of what background checks were completed will determine to what extent, if any, an employer will be held liable. Each year, 110,000 acts of violence occur on the job. The size of a company has little to do with acts of workplace violence -- small businesses are just as likely to experience violence as large organizations.

Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) History

The Criminal Record searches go back to the date when the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) was formed, around 1972-73, approximately 30 years ago. The policy stipulated that all accredited Police Forces (category 1) in Canada would input charges and convictions on the system. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Canada's National Police Force, would be responsible for the administration of the CPIC system in Canada. The CPIC search reveals all levels of criminality, except for those offences or convictions committed while a juvenile or offences that were Pardoned.

The most common statute is the Criminal Code of Canada similar to that in the USA. In Canada we refer to Felonies as Indictable offences and Misdemeanors as Summary conviction offences. CPIC records also reveal outstanding Warrants of Arrest as well as Conditional Discharges by the Courts.

The Privacy laws of Canada, coupled with the Privacy Act in British Columbia prohibits the release of personal information which includes a criminal record EXCEPT when a Waiver or Authorization in respect to Employee Security Clearances is signed.

In order to have a legal criminal record search conducted we only accept names to be checked through CPIC by the accredited Police Department where Consent Signature is obtained. If there is no record of any conviction, etc. in Canada, the Waiver is returned with the Police Use Only portion indicating there was no record. If there appears to be a criminal record because of a similar name and birth date, then the individual's fingerprints are required in order to determine if it is the same individual. That process requires an extra cost depending on what another police department charges for taking them and sending them to us.

E-mail us at or call toll free in North America (888) 540-0456 or in the Vancouver area (604) 540-0455. We'd be happy to send you the appropriate "Consent" forms for your completion and signature by the subject(s) concerned.
